Sport Climbing Combined at the Olympics
Sport climbing made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in a combined format. This meant that athletes competed in three disciplines:
- Speed climbing: Climbers race against the clock to climb a standardized 15-meter wall.
- Bouldering: Athletes attempt to climb a series of short, challenging routes without the use of a rope, using only their hands and feet.
- Lead climbing: Climbers ascend a long, difficult route, aiming to reach the highest point possible within a given time limit.

Changes for Paris 2024
To address criticisms about the combined format, the Paris 2024 Olympics will feature two separate events:
- Combined event: This will include bouldering and lead climbing.
- Speed climbing: This will be a standalone event.
This change aims to better showcase the unique skills required for each discipline and provide more opportunities for athletes to specialize.
